Truman Doctrine Questions
1) What were the reasons that led the USA to getting involved in Greece and Turkey?
At one point of time, the British were not able to provide support to Greece and Turkey. America has been following the ups and downs in both of their economies and once the British pulled out, they were responsible for helping them out. They were both struggling against the pressures of becoming communist from the U.S.S.R. so that was another reason that they had to help the countries in Eastern Europe.
2) What is the Domino Theory and how does it relate to this circumstance?
The Domino Theory was that if one nation in Europe became communism, then the country next to them would also become communist. This is related to this situation since once China became communist, Korea and Vietnam were following in its footsteps. America did not want this to happen especially since losing China was a big lost, so they had a big influence in the Korean War and the fight for Vietnam. If Greece and Turkey would also fall, then communism would easily spread among the other nations such as Iran and as far as India.
3) The Truman Doctrine can be called the beginning of Cold War Foreign policy. Explain this.
The Truman Doctrine was the diplomacy that guided the U.S. on their behavior for the next four decades. Since they decided to help Greece and Turkey by sending aid with the Truman Doctrine, they would be quick to help any other nation that was in a similar situation. In the near future, they would pass another doctrine name the Marshall Plan to give aid to any country struggling against communism. The United States would get involve in another countries' business even if it lead to a war against them. Example of this is the War for China, Korea, and Vietnam from falling to communism.
